Native Hawaiian salt makers combat climate change and pollution to protect a sacred tradition

On the west side of Kauai, Native Hawaiians in Hanapepe continue the centuries-old tradition of salt-making in a terracotta plot of land called the Hanapepe salt patch. This sacred practice of 'paakai' is under constant threat from development, pollution, erosion, and climate change. The salt-making season has been shortened due to above-average rainfall and rising sea levels. Efforts are being made to preserve this cultural practice by combining Western science and Indigenous knowledge to combat the effects of climate change and save the salt patch.
